Privacy Policy

This policy describes information collected during a visit, why it is used, and the limited circumstances in which another service may receive it. Continued use of Nelson County Criminal History signifies acceptance of these practices.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the third-party provider that operates it. The provider processes the query and supplies its response. We do not keep or log those search terms on our systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email may be retained as needed to prepare a response. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.

Data We Gather Automatically

Our servers receive basic technical information when a page loads, including:

  • The IP address assigned to your device
  • Which browser you are using and its version
  • Your device type and operating system
  • The pages you visited and how long you stayed on each
  • The site that sent you here, if any
  • Timestamps for each page view

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small files stored on a device. They help show which pages draw traffic and where visits end. Analytics providers combine that usage data for review. A browser can block cookies, though doing so may change how some features behave.

What We Do With This Data

  • Route search input to the selected partner service
  • Maintain site availability and performance
  • Find and correct technical faults
  • Measure which material visitors use
  • Display advertising that may reflect visitor interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

Nelson County Criminal History does not maintain, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. Its reference material points to the Nelson County Sheriff's Office, local court clerks, Virginia State Police, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor data is not compiled into consumer reports or third-party criminal files.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies operate the search boxes. Information entered there falls under the selected provider's privacy terms. Each provider controls its own retention and sharing practices, so review those terms before submitting a query.

Links to Other Websites

Links lead to government pages, court portals, legal resources, and outside search services. Once a visitor follows a link, the destination's privacy policy applies. Read it before providing personal information.

Advertising providers may use their own systems to measure activity across sites and select ads. We do not control that tracking.

Who Might See Your Data

We do not sell personal data. Limited information may be available to:

  • Search partners that handle queries you run on our site
  • Analytics services we use to track traffic and performance
  • Ad networks that place ads on our pages
  • Law enforcement or government bodies when a valid legal order requires it

How We Protect Your Data

Standard safeguards are used for collected information. No Internet system is fully secure, so we cannot promise that unauthorized access will never occur.

Users Under 18

The service is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. A verified request concerning a minor's information will be addressed.

Your Data Rights

Applicable law may provide rights concerning personal data. Virginia's Freedom of Information Act, Va. Code § 2.2-3700 et seq., governs requests to public bodies, not private-site visitor files. Separately, Va. Code § 19.2-389 limits dissemination of CCRE criminal-history information. Subject to applicable law, a visitor may:

  • Ask for a copy of what we have on file about you
  • Have us fix information that is wrong
  • Request that we erase your data
  • Opt out of certain kinds of data processing
