Nelson County records are divided among these official custodians:
- Court case files: see criminal court case records, or contact the clerk of the court that heard the case
- Criminal records and statewide histories: use Virginia State Police CARE and the SP-167 process
- Sheriff reports: contact Nelson County Sheriff's Office Records at 434-263-7049
- Booking and jail records: call Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail at 434-977-6981, extension 303
- Official Virginia checks: order through Virginia State Police, Criminal Justice Information Services
- Police reports and incident records: contact the agency that wrote the report
- Expungement and sealing: use current Virginia Judiciary forms and file in the proper Circuit Court
